What is a live-in caregiver?
A live-in caregiver is someone willing to come to Canada to work with children, elderly, or special needs while living with the employer’s family. A live-in caregiver is also known as a live-in babysitter, live-in nanny, domestic help, live-in eldercare provider etc. If you like kids or taking care of other people, you can also be a caregiver in Canada.

What are the eligibility criteria?
In order to qualify for this program, you need to:

a) Have completed a high school education that is equivalent to a grade 12 education in Canada.

b) Be able to speak, read and understand English or French at a level allowing you to function independently in a home setting.

c) Have completed 6 months of full-time training in a field related to live-in caregiver job in Canada; or, within the last 3 years, have completed 12 months of full-time paid employment in a field related to the live-in caregiver work you want to do in Canada.

d) Have a clean criminal record.

e) You can “settle down” in Canada while you are under the program.

Note: there is no University studies requirement.
If you do not qualify at this point in time, depending on the area where you live, we can recommend you training courses or other ways you could become eligible.
If you believe you are eligible, we will look for a lovely family for you in Canada.

How long does the process take?
In most of the cases, you should be able to start your new job in Canada in no more than 2 months from the moment you have an employer. However the waiting time varies according to the province where the employer is located and the visa post where you are applying.

We will advise you on the most appropriate visa post where you should apply for your Live-in Caregiver visa. Did you know that it is not necessary to apply in your country of citizenship or permanent residency? Tips like this one will save you time and speed up the process of you arriving in Canada. Our goal is for you to be able to come to Canada as soon as possible.

If I decide to come to Canada as a live-in caregiver, will my spouse and kids come as well?
Yes. After 2 years under the program, you become eligible for Permanent Resident Status and then you can include your spouse and dependent children on your application.

How about Quebec?
There are less rigorous criteria to apply as a live-in caregiver (travailleur domestique) in Quebec. If you already have a family who wants to hire you in the province of Quebec, please contact us. In Quebec there is also a Certificate of Acceptance that is required however we will assist you in obtaining one. You can become part of a French speaking family.

Why should I come to Canada as a live-in caregiver?

After two years in the program you become eligible for the Permanent Resident Status. If you apply for a different immigration program, your waiting time is close to two years anyway. Thus you can work legally in the meantime and earn wages.

No “reasons to return to your country” are assessed by the Consular Officer. As a matter of fact if you want to stay in Canada and apply for your Permanent Resident Status, you may most definitely mention that.

There is no need to prove any settling funds.

You can “get settled” in Canada while you are under the live-in caregiver program. You may also save the settling funds you will need when becoming a Permanent Resident.

By the time you have your PR status, you would have obtained already your driver’s license, your health card, social insurance number etc.

You are covered by the Provincial Health system.

Through the live-in caregiver program you can become a Canadian easier, sooner and by spending less money than through any other program.

Can I study if I am a live-in caregiver?
Yes. You can start studying before you become a Permanent Resident. If you decided to Study English or French or any non-credited courses, no other authorization would be required and you would be treated like a Canadian Student. A study permit may be required if you want to study towards your bachelor or master degree, however we will definitely assist you in obtaining one.

Is there any upper age limit for the program?
No. There is no upper age limit to participate in the program. The minimum age in order to be eligible is 19 years old. If you are older than 19, we will welcome you in our program.

Does the experience as a live-in caregiver count towards my work experience in Canada?
Yes. While under the program, you start gaining Canadian experience, and you can obtain references and records of employment from your previous employers. You and your employer will also contribute to your Canada Pension Plan and Unemployment Fund.

You create your own network of friends and acquaintances while you are here under the program, and this will help you better to get a job while being a Permanent Resident and to get more integrated into the Canadian culture.

As you can see the live-in caregiver program is a good first step towards your new life in Canada.

Do I need to travel outside Canada to apply for my Permanent Resident Status?
No. You can apply for Permanent Resident Status from inside Canada. However you can travel outside Canada while under the program and enjoy your vacation with or without your employer.
